The S.S. Armenian, once used as a prisoner transport during the Boer War. was torpedoed and sunk by U-24 off the Cornish coast on 28th June 1915.  Twenty nine members of her mostly American crew were lost, creating another diplomatic crisis between the U.S. and Germany following the sinking of the R.M.S. Lusitania the previous month.  The three crew members buried here in all probability found their final resting place a long, long way from home.
