Staveley Memorial Gardens, in which the war memorial stands, were built to commemorate the men of the Notts & Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters) who were killed during the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

It most certainly is, Dena. I was passing through on Saturday on my way north and, well, I just had to stop for a few minutes. And no, it wasn’t the only time I stopped that day, so there are a few more posts up-and-coming from around that area (memorials at Alfreton, Shirland and Clay Cross, as well as Brimington Cemetery).
