French Flanders: Armentières, Nieppe & Steenwerck Part Nine – Steenwerck War Memorial

Steenwerck war memorial.

One of my personal favourites among the French war memorials I have visited.

347

Now look, there’s not really an awful lot to write about this post,…

349

…as the memorial is pretty self-explanatory.

349

…apart from this plaque,…

351

…which I would rather like one of our French speakers to help me on.  If anybody’s out there?

352

In the meantime, cast your eyes on this magnificent sculpture atop the memorial…

374

…and the names on the panels on three of the four sides,…

370

363

…as we take a 360° trip around the memorial.

As I said, one of my favourite French war memorials.  Next stop, just the other side of Steenwerk, is the communal cemetery.

  1. Constantin Jh says:

    For the plaque

” To their brothers in arms,
fallen down on the field of Honor
    the veterans ( old fighters)
of Steenwerck ( Steen = Stone werck = work = building of stones )

    Thanks for your blog
