Wervicq-Sud War Memorial

Wervicq-Sud war memorial, photographed in October 2019.

And this is Wervicq-Sud war memorial, photographed some nine years earlier, in November 2010.

Old (above) and new (below) are interspersed throughout the rest of the post.

For a number of years in recent times the war memorial in Wervik, over the border in Belgium, was missing.  When I say missing, it was there, and then it wasn’t, and now it’s back, or at least some of it is.  Next post.

She certainly cleaned up well. They do get into a real state some of these memorials, and cemeteries come to that. Great to see the contrast.

I think they took care not to clean away any of the details on the figure – I’ve seen over-zealous cleaning before and it ain’t a pretty sight! And irreparable.

Reading the names on the stones, it is not surprising that a lot of them are typically Flemish (Belgian). Wervik (B)/Wervicq-sud (F) is spread over the French/Belgian border, so there was (and is) a lot of interaction.

I shall post new photos of the Wervik memorial next. Presumably the same will apply there in reverse, if that makes sense.

During the 19th century, there was poverty and unemployment in our part of Flanders. Industrialisation started somewhat earlier in the North of France, and as a consequence a lot of Flemish families moved to France to stay there, as has happened in my own family. Some elderly may still understand and speak Flemish.
As Flanders is prosperous, we now see the reverse happening: a lot of French come and work in Flanders. In Wervik (and other towns close to the border, as Menen), you’ll find a lot of French cars parked all around, as some of them come and live here.

The number of French cars in Wervik has been commented on over the years. I mean by me and Baldrick. I do appreciate your insightful and always interesting comments, Filip.
