The Daily Postcard No. 2

English Hussars on the way to the front, optimism on their smiling faces.  Another early postcard, this time French, and is that really a pith helmet I spy?  I do believe it is.  The officer in the background leading these cavalrymen had presumably previously served in hotter climes.

Your eagle eye is correct. I’ll need to send you a photo of my Pith Helmet – it’s more squat with a wider brim – the type tropical Colonial Plantation owners, officials and scientists wore – I must have let my mother down!

  2. Steven Hearnden says:

Watched a good documentary (yes, it is that boring!) on the Australian light horse charge at Beersheba. Proof that cavalry attacks could still work in WW1. The terrain obviously helped greatly.

Hope you don’t mind the edit! One of the last cavalry charges. I have certainly seen a documentary on it too at some point.

    • Nick Kilner says:

Interestingly the most recently recorded cavalry charge was by a team of US mounted troops combined with three mounted companies of Mujahideen troops from the Northern Alliance against Taliban positions in Afghanistan in 2001. They made three successful charges on horseback between the 21st and 23rd October.
Prior to that the last successful cavalry charge had been by the Polish cavalry on March 1st 1945

  3. Thanks for this.
Good idea – entertaining and instructive.

Great idea and really interesting thank you. We were due to go back to Ypres and then on to Arras and the Somme in May, but are of course having to put that back until later in the year (quite when is not easy to figure out !).

good afternoon from Scotland- do we have a date for this post card? if it is at Mons I will share a family connection……thank you for some normality in very abnormal times

    • Magicfingers says:

Hello Morag, and thank you. There is no date but it is probably pre-Mons, I would think. I am sure I have the photo in b&w in books, but I can’t find it, so maybe I’m mistaken. Can’t find it online either, although only a cursory look.

  6. Nick Kilner says:

Superb! Loving this my friend, it’s a splendid idea and very kind of you to do.
