The old and the new. Bleriot & Hawk.
A week on, and we paid our respects to those who died so tragically last weekend at Shoreham. Here are some shots of today’s Wings & Wheels event at Dunsford:
Replica 1909 Bleriot.
Don’t forget that Bleriots like this, and later variants, were in frequent use during the early years of the Great War, mainly for reconnaissance purposes, but also scoring a number of victories over the Germans in the hands of their French and British pilots.
Behind you! Eurofighter Typhoon chases Spitfire.
Note the decal on the vertical stabilizer at the back of this Hawk.
The mighty Vulcan, soon to fly no more.
The chance to look inside this wonderful Dakota (used at Arnhem and on D-Day, I was told, and still flying), was too good to miss.
A lot of brave men sat in these seats in years gone by. Makes you think.
B-25 Mitchell.
And, of course, the Red Arrows.
As spectacular as ever.
The classic Cold War MiG-15.
And finally, as we were leaving:
Mustang and Spitfire.
And all taken on the phone camera. Mustn’t grumble. The blue and red umbrella? Sheer luck, I promise you.
Well well MJ – excellent shots and from a phone camera! You certainly are “Magic”.
I’ll forward this to a friend with a lifelong superb camera passion. He went to Shoreham to see especially the Vulcan’s last round of flight which sadly had to be cancelled. He’ll appreciate your post for certain. Thanks for the again wonderful shots
Thanks Sid. Always appreciated. I hope he does enjoy them. Before I forget, I have added a Eurofighter/Spitfire photo since you saw this post. Anyway, remember I once told you I used to take a lot of motorsports photos? One thing I learnt in those days was how to take decent pics of things going very fast, and I guess that all helps with photos such as these, whatever camera you may be using.
Did you know that Louis Bleriot had lodgings in Oyster Lane, Byfleet, at one time?
No Jim, I had no idea! Another Surrey connection. We like that!
My friend, don’t tell Jim he spelled his last name wrong… our secret : )
My lips are sealed. Funnily enough John, of all the people who comment on this site, Jim is one of the few I had actually known for a while before he ‘joined up’.
There is also a curious grave featuring a Bleriot in the churchyard at Mickleham:
