Farnborough War Memorial

Over the road from St. Mark’s church in Farnborough – the one in Hampshire, not Kent – stands this war memorial.

The memorial remembers the men, and women, of Farnborough who died during the Great War.  There are, apparently, one hundred and eighty names, although I haven’t counted them myself.

And there doesn’t appear to be any particular order to the names.

The wood needs some treatment,…

…and a new coat of paint, at the very least.  In fact the whole thing needs a bit of tlc, don’t you think?  But I do approve of the nesting holes – or more specifically, bat holes – in the wood panels at the top.

I like bats.  So here’s a Lesser Horseshoe I photographed in a fougou in Cornwall some years ago for your pleasure.  What an amazing creature.
