Shirland – Memorial Gates, St. Leonard’s Churchyard & War Memorial
Before we leave, a reminder that death was never far away in the mining towns of North East Derbyshire:
Clay Cross War Memorial
Just before we leave, this is not the only memorial along this stretch of road, as you can see to the right of the picture above, and in the photos below.
Staveley War Memorial
Staveley Memorial Gardens, in which the war memorial stands, were built to commemorate the men of the Notts & Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters) who were killed during the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

Interesting plaque I noticed whilst passing through the town of Clay Cross in North East Derbyshire this afternoon.
