Talking of food and drink, here’s a peaceful scene, as French troops brew up (or whatever the French equivalent is) outside a French tavern, but it’s the Dubonnet sign that attracts the eye. 

“You can endure it again”, says the text.

Two cards, similar images, differing emotions.  Here the damnable Boche enter Amiens at the end of August 1914.  Boo!  Hiss! 

Another set of Bamforths, and this time I shall let you into a little secret. 

A snowy scene today, from the Alpine front.  Austrians – ‘our brave Styrians & Carinthians’ – waiting to ambush advancing Italian troops below. 

Oh, how we laughed. 

Magnificent early French card entitled ‘Taking a summit in the Vosges’.  Note the two Chasseurs Alpins on the right.  And the shrapnel!  I’m not sure that position is in the bayonet-training handbook either, but whatever works……
