Private Ernest Jeffery, aged 25, of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, was killed during the advance towards the River Seine in August 1944. He has no known grave, and is remembered on the Bayeux Memorial.
Bill Stone, who died in January 2009 aged 108, just a few weeks after I took these photographs, married Lily Hoskin here in May 1938.
