    My English mother said she met my American father in Newton-Ferrers just after WWII ended and he left Europe. Why would have American soldier have been in Newton-Ferrers?

    I don’t actually know, but there were plenty of Americans in the Salcombe area before D-Day, as you can see if you go to the end of this post:
