Christmas 2023 – Bonne Santé

A Christmas card for Christmas day.  Journée du Poilu – literally, Poilu’s Day.  The poilu on the left on this postcard is living up to his name, poilu meaning ‘hairy’.

Actually, this 1915 card was eventually sent in June 1917, and translates thus; ‘Dear Parents, I had a good trip; I arrived last night at 8 o’clock at our ???? where I found all my comrades. I kiss you with all my heart. Good health.’

And good health to you lot, too.  Thanks for tuning in this year.

Bonne Sante was my Grandad’s habitual toast – he must have picked it up from his time in France during the War.
