Hello, before it is lost in time,I thought you might like to know that before this last war there was field gun standing within some railings on the North West of the Clandon cross roads at Newlands Corner. painted a light grey as a school boy I found it quite interesting Was it a captured trophy? It was taken away, no doubt for scrap when the war started, if you find anything about let me know. bye Bill

Now that’s interesting Bill. I shall make some enquiries when I get the chance, and if I come up with anything I shall let you know. I would imagine you are right when you suggest it was a captured trophy. The local papers might well help, if only we knew roughly when it was put there. Any idea?

Hello thanks for quick reply, no idea when it was mounted there, I should think about 1920, that seems to be the period when these memorials were set up.I think I was about 7 or 8 when I saw it from a bus on my way to Guildford, at that age it was quite a find. Should I find any info. from the Surrey Advertiser I shall let you know…Bye Bill

Sorry to say, no further info regarding field gun. Local estate records might have some knowledge. Probably melted down and returned to sender cheers .Bill

Probably Bill, but that still means it might have been there for twenty years or more! There must be some evidence somewhere. Still, nobody said that this kind of research was easy!!
