Saxmundham War Memorial

Now here’s an incongruous juxtaposition if ever I saw one.

See what I mean.

Although, come to think of it, it does rather ensure a wide audience, does it not?

This was the emblem of Combined Operations Command in the Second World War, and it’s here for good reason, as we shall see.

Unveiled in 2005,…

…the names of the Great War casualties…

…all listed on this side,…

…along with,…

…beneath the wreaths,…

…”Lest We Forget”.

U.S. Air Forces in Europe emblem.  The American presence in Suffolk alone peaked at just over 70,000 in the days prior to D-Day*.  Hence the Combined Operations insignia we saw earlier,…

*And they’re still there, of course, or at least some of their descendants are.

…and this inscription beneath the wreaths on this side; ‘Remembering also members of Allied forces who flew from local airfields never to return’.

And on the final side,…

…the Second World War Roll of Honour,…

…with more wreaths beneath.  Why there has never been a progressive rock band called Incongruous Juxtaposition I have no idea, but such is life.

I would think perhaps the position of the Memorial stirs memories more often than those in remote parks. Dare I say “Location, location, location” ?
